rhino
rhino is a series of works utilizing video, self portraiture, sculpture and installation. It is a multimedia body of work that explores the concept of using false skin as a costume to hide sensitivity. It questions what space a sensitive individual occupies in a world where “toughen up” & “shove emotion down” are prescribed as necessary for navigating; for excelling.
The rhino suit is mimicked after a hazmat or extermination suit and is constructed using thick barrier plastic. It is impermeable and a defence mechanism against both inner emotion spilling out & external insult. It’s structure belies the body beneath.
The rhino mask was hand built with clay and references the protective masks that were worn by many during the Covid 19 pandemic. The mask furthers the disguise by obscuring the wearer. It speaks to the universal desire for protection and safety. Exposure would equate to vulnerability.
Video and photographic images use man made, mechanical landscapes as a background to further contrast feelings of isolation and to amplify both sound & movement.
The rhino costume serves to present a socially acceptable false front while it simultaneously devalues sensitivity and furthers disconnection. It presents us with a choice.
